āISTANBUL CONVENTIONā ā ADDED VALUE TO THE UN CONVENTION AGAINST TRANSNATIONAL ORGANIZED CRIME. INSIGHTS, MONITORING AND EVALUATION
Monday, May 18, 2015 at 2.20ā3.10 p.m. Room M 7
The Istanbul Convention is the first ever legally binding instrument to addressing all forms of violence against women in a comprehensive way. The keynote will focus on the Istanbul Conventionās understanding that violence against women is a form of gender-based violence that is committed against women solely because they are women and comes out of a global culture of discrimination which denies women equal rights with men. Mrs. Nordmeyer will sum up, how the 81 articles apply to all forms of violence against women, including domestic violence, in times of peace and in situations of armed conflict and from the NGO point of view, how it can be used as a blueprint for implementation of gender equality guidelines of the UN Convention against transnational organized crime.
As in the Istanbul Convention, as an important new feature, monitoring of the implementation and evaluation of the legislation is foreseen, Ilona Graenitz will explore how a monitoring system could be set up and how indicators for evaluation could be identified and established, as well as how civil society could be integrated into this process.
