Pierrette Pape is Policy and Campaigns Director at the European Women’s Lobby (EWL), where she coordinates the engagement strategy of the EWL with the European institutions and EWL advocacy strategy. She has been at the EWL since 2009, leading EWL work on violence against women, sexual and reproductive health and rights, and Women, Peace and Security. She is in charge of EWL advocacy work at the UN, as an EWL representative at the Commission on the Status of Women and coordinating work on the SDGs and the implementation of UN women’s rights instruments such as the Beijing Platform for Action.
A victim-centered approach to trafficking and the sex trade requires to bring a feminist perspective onto a very gendered phenomenon, in order to better support women and girls victims and to develop programmes, services and policies which aim at disrupting the system that benefits from their exploitation. The EWL will present its analysis and action to end sex trafficking.
Pat Black is International Director of Advocacy for Soroptimist International, a global organisation with representation in 139 countries, working to advance human rights and the status of women. Pat has extensive experience in international development and women’s rights, with a background in research and education, having taught management for women at University level. She has been a Soroptimist for 20 years and recently held office as President of the Federation responsible for leading clubs across Great Britain, Ireland and many commonwealth countries.
The Karma Nirvana Spoon Project, or When is a Spoon not a Spoon? Movement of women and girls across state borders against their will takes place for many reasons. UK legislation should protect young women from Forced Marriage but many still find their own families are the perpetrators, taking young women to other countries under false pretenses. How can a simple household utensil help these victims? Can this small tool be used to prevent other forms of human trafficking? How Soroptimist International is raising awareness of this project.
Astrid Winkler is Director of ECPAT Austria – the National Consortium for the Protection of Children against sexual exploitation. Since 2001, she works as an expert, trainer and lobbyist on prevention of child sex tourism, child trafficking and abuse, and child protection. She coordinated projects in Austria, Kenya, Bulgaria, Romania and Thailand, and gives lectures and conducts seminars. She works with the tourism industry on implementing the Tourism Child Protection Code, and is a member of the Austrian Taskforce on Combating THB.
The Code (short for “The Code of Conduct for the Protection of Children from Sexual Exploitation in Travel and Tourism”) is an industry-driven responsible tourism initiative with a mission to provide awareness, tools and support to the tourism industry to prevent the sexual exploitation of children. The Code was initiated in 1998 by ECPAT Sweden in cooperation with Scandinavian tour operators and the World Tourism Organization. More than 1,000 travel companies from 42 countries have signed The Tourism Child Protection Code, committing themselves to:
1. To establish a corporate ethical policy against commercial sexual exploitation of children.
2. To train the personnel in the country of origin and travel destinations.
3. To introduce clauses in contracts with suppliers, stating a common repudiation of sexual exploitation of children.
4. To provide information to travelers through catalogues, brochures, in-flight films, ticket-slips, websites, etc.
5. To provide information to local “key persons” at destinations.
6. To report annually.
Laurie Richardson is the UN Liaison for FAWCO, a global network of women’s NGOs focused on empowering women and girls in the areas of education, environment, health and human rights. She has worked with FAWCO on global issues education, awareness raising and advocacy since 2010. She also serves as Secretary, NGO Committee on the Status of Women Vienna. She is a non-profit management and training specialist with experience on development projects in Sri Lanka, India and Pakistan.
From the recent FAWCO Symposium Stand Up Against Human Trafficking in The Hague, Laurie will offer insights into the needs of victims of sex and labor trafficking, and suggestions on how individuals can contribute to prevention and rescue by educating themselves and others, becoming aware of the signs of human trafficking in our daily lives, and taking action. She will provide a brief introduction to the work of the anti-trafficking NGOs CoMensha, FairWork, Free the Girls, Not For Sale, and STOP THE TRAFFIK, as well as The CNN Freedom Project and Tilburg University’s International Victimology Institute.
